Burmese Days - Deichmanske Grünerløkka

I forbindelse med valget i Burma søndag 8. november 2015 viser vi videoinstallasjonen Burmese Days av billedkunstneren Karl Ingar Røys.

Om videoinstallasjonen:
Karl Ingar Røys’s videoinstallation Burmese Days (2015) looks at cultural production in Yangon – Burma’s former capital – and how it has managed to co-exist within the political regime. This multi-channel video installation takes its name from George Orwell’s novel of the same title. Orwell has been seen as a prophet by many Burmese who regard his books as prescient: tracking Burma’s recent history from colonial oppression in Burmese Days, the socialist military coup in Animal Farm, to the tyrannical dictatorship portrayed in his most famous novel 1984.

Burma was ruled by a military junta from 1962 to 2011, which controlled all artistic production; censoring works including George Orwell’s novels and forcing galleries to seek permission for the artworks they exhibited. Røys’s Burmese Days occupies the aftermath of the 2012 media reforms and intimately portrays Yangon as a site where the personal and the political are overlaid. Drawing upon the real experiences of individuals who lived under the regime – from the punk vocalist with outspoken lyrics and the artist who makes work out of rubbish – Røys intertwines subjectivity into an uncertain reality.

Torsdag 12.11 kl.17.30 arrangerer vi en panelsamtale med fokus på den politiske situasjonen i Burma spesielt knyttet til valget den 8.11.15. I tillegg vil kulturaktivisme i regionen bli diskutert med utgangspunkt i arbeidet Karl Ingar Røys har gjort i Yangon det siste året.

Søndag 15.11.15 kl.18.00 - 22.00 presenterer vi et utvalg av filmer fra Human Rights Human Dignity International Film Festival 2015 som ble arrangert 14. til 19.juni 2015 i Yangon.

Arrangementet er et samarbeid mellom månedsavisen Ny tid og Deichmanske bibliotek på Grünerløkka og er støttet av Fritt ord.
