Пам'ять є умовою наративу, і коли вона працює погано то й наратологічна послідовність теж функціонує не найкращим чином. Насправді вміння оповідати залежить лише від пам'яті. Оповідання конструюється пам'яттю, як це можна побачити у таких техніках як ретровізія чи флешбек. Відсилаючи до попереднього досвіду ‘Transiting Memories’ намагається окреслити стосунок між часом і простором, реальністю та фікцією з різних перспектив - посилюючи уявне за допомогою сарказму та абсурдності. Твори цієї збірки показують особисті та персональні історії, повертаючись знову і знову до спогадів з минулого, що створює індивідуалізований візуальний репертуар нашого часу.

About the selection

Memory is the precondition of narrative, and when it is disturbed or it is malfunctioning, narratological coherence and efficiency suffer as well. In fact, narration not only depends on memory. It is inherently constructed by it as well, as seen in the omnipresence of memory-based techniques like retroversion or flashback – in any narrative.

By recalling or recognizing previous experiences, “Transiting Memories” is trying to deliberate the relation between time and space, reality and fiction from different perspectives - increasing the imaginary with sarcasm and absurdity.

These works are compiling personal and collective histories, returning time and time again to memories of the past, that establish in addition a highly personalized image repertory of our time.

Pressure group to transform the Karl Lueger statue into a monument against anti-Semitism and racism in Austria

Elections in Austria have shown just how much anti-Semitism continues to be politically instrumentalised by parties and social groups. Anti-Semitic statements by politicians are not only tolerated but also rewarded with votes. Anti-Semitism is usually a part of a more extensive racist rhetoric that attempts to make cheap populist points.

History has shown us just how important it is to take action against all forms of anti-Semitism. Thus it is even more serious that in Vienna there is still a statue to a politician who, over a century ago, used anti-Semitism as a political strategy in order to secure a power base for himself in the city. The statue to the former mayor, Lueger, cannot be allowed to romanticise history any longer. It should be transformed into a monument against anti-Semitism and racism.

Anti-Semitism has a long tradition in Vienna that stretches back to well before the Nazi era. In the 1880s the lawyer Dr. Karl Lueger discovered how effective hostility against Jews could be, incorporating it in his demagogy/rhetoric and using it for his rise to power in Vienna. He brought together various forms of anti-Semitism in the Christian Socialist Party which finally rewarded Lueger with the office of mayor in Vienna, a post he held from 1897 till 1910. Karl Lueger was one of the most admired politicians of his time. During his period of office Vienna gained notoriety for being the first anti-Semitic capital of Europe (cf. Albert Lichtblau, Die Geburtsstätten des “horror judaei”). Lueger’s infamous and much-quoted dictum was: “I say who is a Jew and who isn’t”.

If one compares the Lueger quote with the speeches of other Austrian politicians of the first and second republics, then a pattern of argumentation emerges that still determines the political discourse in Austria today. This leads to a climate in which, for example, Martin Graf (FPÖ) can be elected to the office of third Parliamentary President (Speaker of the House) by the majority of Members of Parliament despite the fact that he is a member of the German nationalist, extreme right wing fraternity, “Olympia”. Even today, despite being involved in numerous scandals, he still chairs parliamentary sessions.

The honour done to former mayor Lueger by having a monument and a section of the Vienna Ringstraße named after him, cannot be left unqualified. The statue stands for patriarchal hero worship and an undifferentiated way of dealing with history. It thus becomes a monument to trivialising, and tolerating anti-Semitism.

The demands of the work group to redesign the site are intended to create a counter-monument, one that maintains the public visibility of the discourse against anti-Semitism and racism in Austria.

The 10th edition of NJË BOTË/ONE WORLD Human Rights International Documentary Film Festival December 15 - 20, 2009 in Prishtina is run by the Council for the Defense for Human Rights and Freedoms since the year 2000, being part of JEDEN SVET/ONE WORLD Festival of Prague.

The previous nine editions of the NJË BOTË Festival in Prishtina saw around 250 documentaries addressing drastic violations of human rights around the globe. The Festival aims to promote the human rights and democracy, but also to incite meaningful debate on issues such as human rights, civil society, foreign policy, and environment policies.

Happy Together is a group exhibition of contemporary visual art, which brings together artists from the Southeast-European, Baltic and Nordic countries. The aim of the exhibition is to explore different situations in contemporary societies that have their roots in conflict situations, which have emerged from actions, where the collective mind is stronger than the individual.

The exhibition presents a number of prominent contemporary artists and through the range of artistic approaches generates an interesting combination of artworks ranging from drawing to video, installation and performance. What the participating artists all share in their practice is an interest in the topic in question and are approaching it in various, challenging ways.

The participants are: Petra Bauer, Sweden; Birgir Birgisson, Iceland; Igor Grubic, Croatia; Mika Hannula, Finland/Germany; Minna Henriksson, Finland/Turkey; Hanna Jaanisoo, Finland; Villu Jaanisoo, Estonia/Finland; Kiba Lumberg, Finland; Kristina Norman, Estonia; Karl Ingar Roys, Norway; YKON (Ulu Braun, Sasha Huber, Tellervo Kalleinen, Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen, Tomas Träskman), Finland; Katarina Zdjelar, Serbia/The Netherlands; Ahmet Ögut, Turkey/The Netherlands.

Our idea is to create and generate a platform to think through critically yet constructively the idea of a collective and a community. The basic realization that we follow is that collective identities are important and even necessary. The task is to confront them and to work with them to fruitful and tolerant ends.

With this collective effort, with this invitation to think with, we are asking: Who are we when we claim we belong to a certain community? What happens when the sense of belonging to a community becomes more dominant for our actions than our individuality; does being part of a particular community also require that there is an Other outside of it; when is a sense of collective identity constructive and when is it deconstructive, regressive and dangerous; is there even a possibility for a positive and constructive kind of sense of collective identity.

As it has now materialized, in a productive even if unintended way, Happy Together serves as a sort of pre-view to the upcoming Venice Biennial. Three of the participants will be presented at their national pavilions next summer, namely, Norman for Estonia, Ögut for Turkey and Zdjelar for Serbia.

The exhibition is initiated and curated by Mika Hannula, professor for artistic research at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts of the University of Gothenburg and Minna Henriksson, artist living and working in Helsinki and South-east Europe, and organized together with the Centre of Contemporary Art, Estonia and Tallinn Art Hall.

fama_fame / fame_hunger is an on-going project which entails an array of initiatives, events and exhibits at an international level. The concept “to become famous” focuses both on the ambition of the artist to be accepted in the art system and on the basic need to survive in the everyday life, by reasoning on large numbers: how many poor people are needed to maintain the status of a star? And on the contrary, how many hopeless people need well-known celebrities to dream of a better life?

fama_fame / fame_hunger researches on this connection based on our media-consumering system. Our investigation is carried out through the production and realization of events in different European cities and a travelling exhibition, enriched each time by local artists' & curators contributions. A networking project with charge new artists and new local vision/concept, on the issue, in all the national steps.

The project fama_fame / fame_hunger relies on the hospitality of the local cultural and political institutions, all over Europe, and is attended by a local and an international audience. Exhibitions are public and for free events.

After the three switzerland step, now Fama/Fame – Fame/Hunger is in The Netherlands, only with the Artists' Video from the network, moving to Italy and Germany in the next months.

The PrintROOM collection is a growing and travelling, international collection of artists’ publications and print projects. For this occasion a selection is made of publications and printed matter dealing with the project title: fama_fame. Some artists want to share their personal lives and ideas with an audience; they help stilling the voyeuristic hunger that many people have and at the same time their own craving for exposure is satisfied. some artists simply are superstars (acknowledged or not). some artists dream of fame, (but they want to be famous for strange things, like for a lonely bicycle ride to the north pole..). some artists criticize our consumerist society. some artists make books about food, some books just look so yummy you would like to eat them...printed matter is a way of disseminating images and ideas, and because of this it is in itself a strategy for stilling hunger (for new ideas) and for reaching out to an audience and get noticed! PrintROOM is a project by Rotterdam based artist Karin de Jong. 3. e-flux video rental (EVR) is an ongoing work by Anton Vidokle and Julieta Aranda, comprising a free video rental, a public screening room, and a film and video archive that is constantly growing. This collection of over 850 works of film and video art has been assembled in collaboration with more than 400 artists, curators and critics.

In the 1960s and 70s, artists were drawn to working with video in part because it was cheap to use and easily reproduced and distributed. But video art has become increasingly assimilated to the precious-object economy of the art market. EVR is a poetic exploration of alternative processes of circulation and distribution, and it is structured to function like a typical video rental store, except that it operates for free. VHS tapes can be watched in the space, or, once a new member fills out a membership form and contract, they can be checked out and viewed at home. Originally presented at a storefront in New York, in 2004, EVR has traveled to art venues in Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Seoul, Paris, Istanbul, Canary Islands, Austin, Budapest, Boston, Antwerp, Berlin, Miami, Lyon and Lisbon. EVR will travel to Cali, Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo later this fall. Having outlived the technology that made it possible (VHS video tape players), the project will be permanently archived with t he Arab Image Foundation in Beirut and Moderna Galerija in Ljubljana, in 2009.

Every time EVR opens in a new city, local artists, curators and writers are invited to serve as selectors, choosing artists whose work is added to the collection. Initially brought to Kunst Werke by Hila Peleg several years ago, EVR is returning to Berlin having more then doubled in scope. This new installment will include selections by Anri Sala, Magdalena Magiera, Ellen Blumenstein, Tanja Leighton, Solmaz Shabazi, Nicolas Siepen, Florian Wüst, Nanna Heidenreich, Adina Popesku, Renate Wagner, Paz Aburto Guevara, Maike Cruse, Adnan Yildiz, Clara Meister, Dieter Roelstrate, Monika Szewczyk, Severin Dünser, Florian Zeyfang, Cosmin Costinas and others.

EVR will host a program of special screenings and talks with participants of the project, starting with a double feature of films by Lawrence Weiner: Water In Milk Exists and A Bit Of Matter And A Little Bit More, selected by Monika Szewczyk and Pierre Huyghe.(with many thanks to Noritoshi Hirakawa)

Les illusions nécessaires est le titre d’un ouvrage de l’écrivain américain Avram Noam Chomsky : Necessary Illusions (1989, South End Press edition)
Dans ce livre Chomsky s’attache à mettre en évidence les processus par lesquels les médias et les politiques usent de la propagande pour communiquer et détourner l’attention des véritables enjeux politiques. Le maintien de la confusion, d’une proximité illusoire, évite qu’une véritable démocratie devienne effective.

Dans cette vidéo, Kar Ingar Roys mixe différentes publicités afin de leur donner un nouveau sens. Le message est présenté comme de rapides annonces qui donnent la possibilité d’interpréter le travail comme une critique. (….) Ces publicités veulent nous séduire commercialement avec l’illusion de l’éternelle beauté, la jeunesse, le succès. Mais si vous écoutez plus attentivement, l’histoire dans ces publicités devient très différente. C’est aussi une « vidéo-lettre » où deux personnes terminent leur relation amoureuse. Le couple présente alors une confrontation de leurs espoirs, de leurs rêves et la vie intime de leur relation. « to whom it may concern » devient alors une histoire très personnelle. Ces deux écoutes font émerger le langage caché, intime, qui est commercialement utilisé dans les publicités pour nous séduire.

In his video titled "Erna's Video", the Norwegian artist Karl Ingar Roys analyses the production of documentaries whose aim is to inform the population of the less developed countries in Europe and worldwide of Norwegian tough immigration requirements. The films were conceived and commissioned by Erna Solberg, the former Minister of Local Government and Regional Development in the Norwegian government. Some independent media from the Balkan region also took part in their production. Karl Ingar Roys' work consists of showing the video and organizing discussions with the members of the film crews taking part in Erna's project, as well as with the local audience.
In “Mediation”, a new dual video work made in Rotterdam, 2008, Karl Ingar Roys leads us into a reflection on the aftermath of the controversial politician Geert Wilders release of his anti-muslim film “Fitna”. In the video “I am sorry” he has collected a variety of videos posted on the internet, made by Dutch people as a response to the negative image Wilders have painted of the Dutch. The second video “Alles is oke” initially seems to function as a mediation but also slowly forces us in to question the current political & social situation in Holland.

The main theme of the 13^th Edition of the Biennale of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean is the Individuation of the Kairos, the moment when the change is possible. The workshop Art Shakes the Politics wants identify the actions which make the changes possible. Starting by the principle that the culture reinforce the civil society mostly in developing countries in the Mediterranean area. The cultural activism creates alternative networks and structures, favorites the individual participation in politics, strengthens democratic institutions and favorites the aggregation.

Fitna is a 2008 short film by the right-wing Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders. Approximately 17 minutes in length, the film shows a selection of Suras from the Qurán, interspersed with media clips and newspaper clippings showing or describing acts of violence and hatred by Muslims. The movie wishes to demonstrate that the Qurán and the Islamic culture in general, motivates its followers to hate all who violate the Islamic teachings.

Consequently, the film argues Islam encourages, among others, acts of terrorism, antisemitism, violence against woman and Islamic universalism. A large part of the movie deals with the influence of Islam on the Netherlands.

MEDIATION is a video installation made in the aftermath of the controversial release of Wilders film.

Sarkozy was swearing to do away with the legacy of May

Karl Ingar Roys artistic strategic is based on project-related researches on image/film/video/symbols as subjective controlled conveyable instruments. Contextual and narrative structures are reorganized in order to investigate underlying means of interest. The emphasis is put on deconstruction and reconstruction of meaning in a predetermined or institutionalized context where he explores the relationship between politics, economy and art.

Karin Kihlberg and Reuben Henry have been collaborating since 2004. Working primarily in video their practice explores filmic language through performance and collaboration. Sometimes they abandon the medium altogether in order to use the structure and function of film in unconventional ways, by re-applying it to new situations such as live art and performance, and through collaborative processes with participants and audiences.

They are based in Birmingham, UK, where they have also direct Springhill Institute, a seasonal programme of international artists production residencies, while for the past four winters they have worked in Barcelona, Sweden, Australia & China and Prague.

Springhill Institute has also facilitated residencies for Arts Council England at Het Wilde Weten in Rotterdam and Stiftung Starke in Berlin.

The former Minister of Local Government and Regional Development of Norway, Erna Solberg*, used untraditional methods to reduce the pressure of unwanted immigration and to stop refugees from coming to Norway.

In 2003 she initiated, together with the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration and national network stations in the Balkans, several TV productions about the tough requirements for obtaining Norwegian residency, and caution that it’s no easy task to enter Norway, legally or illegally. The selection of suitable TV channels and journalists for these documentaries was made by the Norwegian Embassies in Belgrade and Sarajevo who also paid for these productions.

These Norwegian anti-commercials has been broad casted on national TV channels like FTV in Bosnia-Herzegovina and on RTV21 in Kosovo (UDI also run similar anti-emigration campaigns in Bulgaria, Ukraine, Russia and Somalia).

In Kosovo a more tough strategy was used. From an original one-hour documentary, a 30 second spot was edited out and broadcasted together with conventional commercials every day for 1 month at RTV21.

The expenses in relation to Solberg’s and UDI’s anti-commercials were worth every penny following Erna Solberg’s statement in an interview with the Norwegian daily newspaper Aftenposten.

« Fête des Lumières »

In late October 2005, the French suburbs were on fire. For some foreign media, France was facing a civil war. The Norwegian Karl Ingar Roys interpretes this phenomenon - the suburb crisis and is deriding it: candle-cars representing the French flag are melting before the spectators' very eyes. An ironic hint to the national identity so often advertised in French political life.

A video camera is recording the scene. We are all the possible actors. We have mixed feelings of fright and marvel and we contemplate the fire.

The religious aspect is also important – of course, it evokes the French traditional « Fête des Lumière ». These toy-cars are burning slowly like church candles. Hermeneutic Temptations is a prayer two years after.

Mixing art, politics and religion, Karl Ingar Roys is organizing an ironic, colorful and ephemere anniversary.

Fin octobre 2005, les banlieues brulent. Pour certains mèdias ètrangers, la France est en proie à une guerre civile.

Le norvègien Karl Ingar Roys interprète ce phènomène, la crise des banlieues, et le tourne en dèrision: des voitures-bougies aux couleurs du drapeau francais fondent sous nos yeux spectateurs. Clin d`æil ironique à l`identite nationale, chère à notre actualitè politique. Une camèra de surveillance filme la scène. Nous en sommes les acteurs potentiels. Partagès entre frayeur et èmerveillement, nous contemplons un embrasement.

La dimension religieuse est importante elle aussi, elle èvoque bien sur notre traditionnelle Fête des Lumières. Ces voitures-jouets se consument lentement comme des cierges d`èglise. Hermeneutic Temptations est un recueillement deux ans après. Si certains ont tentè d`ètouffer l`idèe d`anniversaire, la cèlebration de ce soulèvement pourrait s`inscrire dans nos rituels, à l`image "des traditionnelles grèves et achats de fin d`annèe"

“Historical turning points and the return of the memory
Some time ago Blendi Fevziuo told me about the surprise he had felt when, while he was interviewing people in order to gather material for a TV program, he found out that a significant part of them (and especially the young) showed a shocking lack of knowledge and indifference vis-à-vis our history, including the communist period. At first sight, this would seem to contradict the impression one gets when one notice how much space our press dedicates to the debates on history, or the so-called ‘memoirs’. (…)

During the whole of known history, there have been just as many advocates of memory, in other words, people who have believed that the truth about the past must be confronted irrespective of the price paid, as there have been others who have defended the opinion that there are moments when it is better for society to forget. (…)

Like everywhere else, the revisionism of history did not stop with the period of the Communism.
By casting a shadow of doubt on the official version of history believed up to that time, the collapse of Communism naturally produced a general trend towards the revision of history on the whole. It brought about a debate on many of the pages of history on which total silence had been maintained before. The sole possible discourse of the time of Communism – when all dissident was prohibited – now is multiplied, fragmented, and contested by a series of other discourses, by spokesmen of various interests, and by different visions and memories which sometimes go against each other. As a result we have at the same time a crisis of memory and of the pluralism of memories.”

Following on a pace from the exhibition where it was, shall I be which took place in September 2005 at Keçiburcu in Diyarbak›r, inquiring that invites for a reply on how Europe is European but also how does one create ones own space, this new group exhibition Territories of Duration continues to explore the issues by questioning 'difference of identity' and 'difference' which inhibits transitional interactions, and therefore it aims to create a cross-border communication dialogue at 'existential territorial' boundaries within an interdisciplinary artistic approach.

For this group exhibition, Cengiz Tekin, Dilek Winchester, Elena Cologni, Genco Gülan, Karl Ingar Røys, Nasan Tur, Shezad Dawood, Sophia Kosmaoglou and Turan Aksoy have been invited to present works addressing the questions of new European space.

The project curator Gülsen Bal brings forward artist responses by asking where do 'borders' and 'in-between spaces' relative to the 'inside' and 'outside' inter-connect in the context of a Europe and its borders, specifically the new the fortress Europe (Festung Europa) which has walls of concrete significance, marks a rupture with a Europe to come.

These issues subsequently will cover the differential structures in representational boundaries as well as some complementary ideas, including the border in its essential paradox as it often characterized by affinity to the relation between 'here' and 'there,' between 'us' and 'them,' between 'city' and 'country.' This touches not only our political borders, but also the borders with an external world particularly in relation to the material, the geographic object called "Terre" (Erde) with its existence to the ambivalent articulation.

In this context territories of Duration will explore the temporary mediation systems with its practical ramifications in a way that it will simultaneously open up a range of fields of possibility on different scenarios where the new ways of being in the world are re-read to follow unfamiliar routes and cross trans-local and/or trans-national boundaries in re-locating European space, which is firmly rooted in the daily life.
Amidst such transgressions, there emerges edges of inter-disciplinarity and critical modalities.

Questo progetto vuole aprire e allargare una discussione e scambio per oltrepassare il confine: la barriera, limite e linea che delimitano non solo il territorio fisico, ma, a partire dalla nostra esperienza personale, anche mentale e temporale. La nostra intenzione è quella di spostarci fisicamente per presentare il nostro lavoro nei luoghi a cui siamo legati e capire quali sono le specificità delle problematiche che appartengono a ciascuno, coinvolgendo un artista che opera localmente. Border Crossing… Here And Somewhere Else (11-29 ottobre 2003, Gallery X, Istanbul, Turchia) con anche Sylvia Erden e Border Crossing, Tur Re Tur... A Milano/Bologna Elena Cologni ha coinvolto Annalisa Cattani per capire il senso che questa operazione poteva avere in Italia, la quale a proposto il titolo Semionauti.
‘L’aspetto del coinvolgimento e del dialogo è cruciale nel progetto a Milano, nella creazione dei lavori e nel dibattito che vorremmo generare. Non a caso tutti noi coinvolti abbiamo in comune una metodologia di lavoro che in Inghilterra e’ ormai considerato ‘il modo’, si tratta di una sovrapposizione di ruoli e modi che comprende la ricerca, il dialogo, il fare, il documentare e lì è condotto anche come ricerca accademica in Università. Ciascuno di noi opera in un ambito molto specifico che intendiamo portare con noi in questo appuntamento allargando ulteriormente la rete di rapporti. Il proposito iniziale di varcare i confini avviene attraverso il fare nell’atto del fare (metalinguaggio). Il processo conduce verso una meta che paradossalmente si tende a non raggiungere, mai poiché il tendere-a, l’investigazione è ciò che consente il dialogo, questo è ciò su cui ci soffermiamo. Lo scambio con Chiara Agnello a C/O careof è stato fondamentale per capire che questo modo di operare poteva trovare un interlocutore che ci avrebbe aiutato nel confronto e dato uno spazio per raccogliere il materiale di viaggio. Inoltre, Gino Gianuizzi a Bologna ha intrapreso con lo storico spazio neon>campobase, una direzione radicale di ricerca a cui cercheremo di contribuire con questo lavoro.’ Elena Cologni

Gulsen Bal, si occupa di meccanismi che consentono un impegno critico nei confronti della produzione artistica. Creando una zona di conflitto tra piccoli spazi nascosti, dichiarando il proprio carattere di ‘queerness’, nella misura in cui vengono temporaneamente abitati nella vita di ogni giorno e creando punti d’incontro che però divergono… Ciò che è
mediato attraverso il mezzo fotografico come è nei suo recente lavoro Now Voyager, è la familiarità che suscita pur utilizzando contesti inusuali. Gulsen ha invitato Zeigam Azizov che presenta At the end of the world.

Elena Cologni ri-presenta Mnemonic Present, Un-Folding #6 in forma di immagini (parte di una serie prodotta come ricerca e supportata da Arts and Humanities Research Council and Central Saint Martins College, Londra) e l’artist book Mnemonic Present, Shifting Meaning. Lavoro attaverso il quale è iniziato un dialogo da due anni, con Helena Blaker sul rapporto imagine-testo-memoria nella pratica performativa e conservazione della documentazione. Il materiale sarà anche punto di partenza per definire il contesto di visual art conceptual performance per cui hanno avuto il supporto di Live Art Development Agency (Londra) e Artsadmin.

Annalisa Cattani presenta con Dialoghi Socratici la metodologia di Darth (Annalisa Cattani, Adriana Torregrossa, Dragoni-Russo, Laura Mancuso, Sabrina Muzi, Stefano Pasquini, Davide Rivalta, Fabrizio Rivola, Petar Stanovic). Darth e una associazione di artisti-curatori che da tre anni svolge attivita di ricerca, organizzando incontri e alcuni eventi espositivi. Tra le attività cardine di Darth si ricordano gli Incontri a porte chiuse che ogni volta prevedono l’ invito di un ospite la cui attività sia legata o tangente l’arte in modo interdisciplinare. A differenza della mostra o del convegno, l’invitato (artista, curatore, economista, sociologo, etc) entra a fare parte di un incontro-confronto reale. Si viene a creare un tempo medio che non è né quello della cena tra amici, né quello formale dell’evento pubblico. Questo tempo medio è diventato il lavoro stesso, una meta-arte che cerca di ricreare le condizioni per un dialogo necessario. In quest’occasione verrà messa in visione la documentazione di alcuni eventi selezionati dei precedenti incontri con Emanuela Dececco, Emilio Fantin, Eva Marisaldi, Cesare Pietroiusti e Pierluigi Sacco. Inoltre il 9 maggio alle ore 14 ci sarà un Incontro a porte chiuse con Mario Gorni.

Karl Ingar Røys presenta “Erna’s Video”, una serie di interviste con gente della ex Yugoslavia sulle implicazioni strutturali e sociali delle nuove strategie di informazione del governo norvegese per dissuadere coloro che cercano asilo politico di andare in Norvegia. L’ex ministro dei governi locali e dello sviluppo regionale in Norvegia, Erna Solberg (anche leader del partito Høyre), cercò di ridurre la la pressione di coloro che non gradivano gli immigrati con metodi discutibili. Nel 2003 organizzò con il dipartimento immigrazione, dei documentari su come fosse difficile ottenere visti di soggiorno con la collaborazione di televisioni dei Balcani. Questi anti-commercials sono poi stati trasmessi su TV nazionali in Bosnia & Herzegovina, Kosovo, Ukraina, Russia e Somalia. Durante il suo viaggio di ricerca in Kosovo, Karl Ingar Røys ha incontrato l’artista e giornalista Alban Muja che presenterà i suoi lavori video Palestina e Free Your Mind.

Il 12 Maggio ci sarà una giornata studio all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, e oltre agli artisti sopracitati, Annalisa Cattani e Darth incontreranno la coppia di artisti Rita Cannarezza e Pierpaolo Coro, che presenteranno il progetto “Going beyond the countries art”.

“One of the distinguishing features of modern life is that it supplies countless opportunities for regarding (at a distance, through the medium of photography) horrors taking place throughout the world. Images of atrocities have become, via the little screens of the television and the computer, something of a commonplace. But are viewers inured -- or incited -- to violence by the depiction of cruelty? Is the viewer’s perception of reality eroded by the daily barrage of such images? What does it mean to care about the sufferings of people in faraway zones of conflict?”

A better introduction to understand Karl Ingar Roys’ video installation Diatribe & Fan would be hard to find. In ‘Diatribe’ he exposes us to an anonymous man-hunt where people are being slaughtered by a state of the art equipped combat-helicopter. ‘Diatribe’ is an authentic horrifying document where Roys has only added the title, which is to be understood as ‘a thunderous verbal attack’.

By using this as his title he plays with the underlying contradiction in the communication between the helicopter pilots and the base, their totally controlled, inexpressible attitude to what they actually are causing. We, as an audience experience this as an abstract bloodbath, where we never actually see the blood as it is an infrared-recording with no sound from the actual battle-field, but we still get a close-up of people’s desperate fight for survival, their suffering and their imminent death.

Karl Ingar Roys exhibit ‘Diatribe’ together with the video work ‘Fan’, a second video where we meet ‘our self’ represented as a 3D doll trying to learn the art of relaxation, a reference to the media presented justified urge to search for individual happiness. An inviting voice leads us into a world of hypnosis where the doll, this young masculine perfect male represent everything we

should want for ourselves.

Scenes of an abducted kneeling child and three kidnappers, similar to the Middle-East beheading videos released on the internet, are cross edited into ‘Fan’ where the kidnappers are wearing Palestine scarf’s to hide their identity. At the same time our helpful therapist’s voice is promising us a relaxing night: “Let me be responsible for you to go to sleep tonight”. The ‘leading’ kidnapper then pretends to cut of the victim’s head and the video fades out to digital noise with children’s laughter in the background.

I have to admit that this video makes me furious. Even when I know it is only children playing a game and that it is all staged by a filming adult, not so different from my childhood photos where we play Cowboys & Indians. But as I am obviously influenced by the recent situations in Iraq, it makes it hard to look at this as only a game.

Karl Ingar Roys knows this, and he knows how to use the means of the Media to reveal its structures and political measures. Focusing on the on-going discussions in the media if it is right or wrong to communicate videos of violent and politically motivated beheadings and the mass-medias cynical exploitation of sensations, we see that Roys here want to show us something else.

I see an honest and sincere presented cynicism, a suggestion on our relationship with violence and how we deal with cruelty. Our mechanism of suppression and our methods of dissociation are not so unlike the way the pilots in the helicopter deal with the horrible sterile situation in ‘Diatribe’.

In June 1938 Virginia Wolf published ‘Three Guineas’, (as S. Sontag writes in her book ‘Regarding the Pain of Others’) “her brave, unwelcome reflections on the roots of war”, where she after a long discussion concludes: “No ‘we’ should be taken for granted when the subject is looking at other people’s pain”. Woolf argumentation for saying this lies in her divide of the sexes but also in the differences of attitude towards life. This is also how I expect the reception of Roys videoinstallation will be, divided.

But Roys has had this in his mind when he offers us an intricate solution; one of the videos will always be shown inside the seat of a chair which can be used to sit on, when watching the other video projected on the wall. It is therefore impossible to watch both videos at the same time and by exhibiting the work in this manner he actually manage to lure the audience into taking a personal stand.

Roys does not moralise but shows us what we face every day through media. But one thing he really does is to lead me into reflections on how it is to be a human, confronted with inhumanity. Unaffected by digital media Viktor Hugo (1802-1885) said: “Between two servants of Humanity, who appeared eighteen hundred years apart, there is a mysterious relation….Let us say it with a sentiment of profound respect: Jesus wept, Voltaire smiled. Of that divine tear and of that human smile is composed the sweetness of the present civilisation.” We still live in an age divided by tears and smile, where the tears are bitter and the smile unkind.

Palladium refers to Greek Mythology and the classic legend of the War of Troy.
The city of Troy was under protection of Athena and the manifestation of this alliance was the Palladium; a statue which was not supposed to be seen by the common people. The Palladium was placed in the most sacred and secure part in the Temple of Troy. Following the legend, Troy was safe for any outside threats as long as the Palladium was securely kept inside the solid temple walls.

Palladium is constructed by four transparent, rotating plexi-glass layers with printed letters placed inside each other in the shape of a cylinder. At the core is a light witch projects the letters on the surrounding walls. From certain viewpoints and at certain times it is possible to reveal new meanings and constructed sentences due to the ever rotating movements.

In his video Karl Ingar Røys mixes together many different commercials to give the work a completely new meaning. The message is presented just as fast as advertisings’ aesthetics, allowing the viewer to be tempted to interpret the work within an advertising critical context. One becomes seduced by the editing.
Sentences such as ‘Apparently you never had it so good’ and especially ‘How clear do you want it to be?’ fall right into the politically correct interpretations of the commercial; that the commercial seduces us with simple solutions of eternal beauty, youth and success.

But no; if you look closer at the video work, the video becomes something completely different.
It is simply a video-letter where one person ends a relationship with another person. The couple, though seen only from one perspective has a confrontation with their wishes, their dreams and the life that this person has lived in the relationship.

‘To whom it May Concern’ suddenly becomes something very personal. Since the idea suggests that it could be two separate interpretations of the work, the commercial and its language is stripped and revealed.

In David Cronenbergs film ‘Existenz’ ( 1999 ) a game designer has created the ultimate game, a game which is controlled by a game-pad connected directly to your spine. By being ‘on-line’, your body follows you into this game-world that appears so real that the question of which reality is most real has to be questioned.

Issues on dealing with notions of multiple realities as a necessity are discussed in Paul Virilio’s book ‘The Art of The Motor’. He says the de-realised man is a disoriented man and points at the American discovery, the GPS (Global Positioning System) as our ‘second watch’. If you have a watch with GPS you can, thanks to satellites, know exactly where you are geographically.

In the Fifteenth century we invented the first watch to tell us what time it was, and now we have invented the GPS to tell us where we are. To grasp this notion of being lost in reality, one has to think of our understanding of time and speed in relation to flow of information. The desire in making smarter and faster computers triggers the ultimate wet dream of an interactive situation where the time of ‘input and output’ are reduced to zero.
